Game Recap

Final

9/12/04 Vs. Oakland Raiders Leads the team with 7 receptions for a total of 99 yards and a long of 39 yards, the longest yardage passing play of the game.  Tommy Maddox leads the decisive drive, hitting Ward for 15 and 11 yards and Jay Riemersma for 12 ahead of Jeff Reed's game winning field goal, which left no time for Oakland to respond. W 24-21
9/19/04 @ Baltimore Ravens With 6 receptions for 151 yards, this is one of the best games of Ward's career, including a 58 yard catch from rookie Ben Roethlisberger after Maddox is injured in the third quarter.  The hit that injured Maddox leads to a fumble recovery by Terrell Suggs.  Ward makes the tackle to stop the play.   This is his second highest receiving yardage total and his ninth 100-yard game.   In the only loss of the regular season, the Ravens take it 13-30. L 13-30
9/26/04 @ Miami Dolphins Even through torrential rain caused by the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne, for the third straight game, Ward leads the team, falling just short of another 100 yard game.  He makes 9 receptions for 99 yards, a season high.  Ward makes the only TD in the game, diving and making what should have been an impossible catch on a low pass from Roethlisberger, who starts in his first NFL game. W 13-3
10/3/04 Vs. Cincinnati Bengals Ward carries the ball once for a 10 yard gain, and again leads the Steelers for the fourth straight game with 6 receptions from Roethlisberger for 48 yards. W 28-17
10/10/04 Vs. Cleveland Browns Roethlisberger, becoming more comfortable and more productive with each start, passes to Ward for 6 receptions for 61 yards.  Ward moves past Lynn Swann into third place in Steelers history with 5,506 yards receiving. W 34-23
10/17/04 @ Dallas Cowboys Ward leads the team for the fifth time in six games with nine receptions for 76 yards.  Roethlisberger becomes the first Pittsburgh quarterback to win in Dallas since Bradshaw in 1982. W 24-20
10/31/04 Vs. New England Patriots Ward ties Randle El for team high 6 receptions for 58 yards and a rush of 11 yards.   The Steelers defeat the Patriots, breaking the Patriots 21 game winning streak. W 34-20
11/7/04 Vs. Philadelphia Eagles Ward has his first TD since the September 26 game against Miami, finishing with 2 TD's, 1 rushing and 1 reception.  Ward scores the first rushing TD of his career on a 16-yard run, and passes Louis Lipps for fourth place on the Steelers' all-time TD list (40). W 27-3
11/14/04 @ Cleveland Browns Ward has three receptions for 42 yards.  Throws a crunching block on defensive end Orpheus Roye on a run by Roethlisberger.  Ward also makes the tackle on Daylon McCutcheon after he intercepts Roethlisberger.  Roethlisberger becomes the first rookie quarterback to begin 7-0 since the 1970 merger as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Browns. W 24-10
11/21/04 @ Cincinnati Bengals In a slow game for Ward, he has 3 catches for 15 yards.  With the win the Steelers are 9-1 for the first time since 1978, when they won their third Super Bowl in five years. W 19-14
11/28/04 Vs. Washington Redskins Ward extends his streak of games with a reception to 99. He leads the team for seventh time this season, finishing with 3 receptions for 42 yards.  The Steelers' nine-game winning streak is their longest since they won their final nine in 1976. They are 10-1 for the first time since 1975, the second of their four Super Bowl championship seasons. W 16-7
12/5/04 @ Jacksonville Jaguars Ward extends his reception record to 100, making the first score of the game with a 37 yard TD from Roethlisberger. He finishes with 4 receptions for 80 yards. W 17-16
12/12/04 Vs. New York Jets With this game belonging to Jerome Bettis, who surpasses the 13,000-yard rushing mark early in the fourth quarter, Ward still manages to make 2 receptions for 38 yards, extending his streak to 101 games with a reception. The Steelers win a club-record tying 11 in a row. W 17-6
12/18/04 @ New York Giants Ward leads the team with 9 for 134 yards, having his tenth career 100 yard game.  He becomes only the third receiver to surpass 6,000 yards, and reaches 500 receptions, only the second Steeler to achieve that mark.  Bettis also sets a Steelers' record with his 48th 100-yard rushing game, one more than Franco Harris and fifth best in NFL history. W 33-30
12/26/04 Vs. Baltimore Ravens With the Steelers playing a run heavy offense, Ward ties with Plaxico Burress and Randle El with a team-high three receptions for 21 yards.  The franchise-record winning streak extends to 13 games and eliminates the Ravens from playoff contention. W 20-7
1/2/05 @ Buffalo Bills Ward has 2 receptions from Maddox for 11 yards, his play being limited to prepare for the playoffs, as was Roethlisberger's.  He tops 1,000 yards for the fourth straight season.  The Steelers become just the fourth team in NFL history -- and first in the AFC -- to finish 15-1. W 29-24
AFC Divisional Playoff 1/15/05 Vs. New York Jets Ward leads the team with 10 receptions for 105 yards and the second 100-yard receiving postseason performance of his career.  Reed's 33-yarder with just more than 12 minutes gone in overtime wins the game for the Steelers. W 20-17 in OT
AFC Championship 1/23/05 Vs. New England Patriots Ward produces his second straight 100-yard receiving game and leads the team with five receptions for 109 yards, including a 30-yard TD reception.  Ward has nine passes in back-to-back postseason games.  After a 15-1 season, the Steelers take a devastating loss to the Patriots.
