Starting the season off facing the team that knocked the Steelers out
of last year's conference championship, Ward starts off the season strong, leading
the team with eight receptions for 90 yards and a TD on a 13-yard pass from
Kordell Stewart. He also has a tackle on Terrell Buckley at the
Pittsburgh 47 and returned for -2 yards.
Vs. Oakland Raiders
Ward leads the team for the second consecutive week with seven
catches for 92 yards, including a 34-yard TD pass from Kordell Stewart. Ward scores two TDs
for his first multiple-touchdown performance of his career.
Vs. Cleveland Browns
Ward leads the team for the third straight game with nine catches for
104 yards, his first 100-yard game of the year and the third of his career.

Ward ties Antwaan Randle El for the team high of five receptions for
45 yards. Ward scores his team-leading
fourth touchdown of the season when he dives to hit the pylon after
stretching for a pass from Tommy Maddox. Ward also has one run for 11 yards.
@ Cincinnati Bengals
With the Steelers dominating, Ward has four
receptions for 24 yards, moving past Charles Johnson into sixth place on the
Steelers' all-time career receiving list. He also runs once for 20
Vs. Indianapolis Colts
Ward scores two TDs on five receptions from Tommy Maddox totaling 76
yards receiving, including a leaping catch over cornerback Nick Harper
for a 14-yard touchdown. Also one
carry for eight yards.
@ Baltimore Ravens
Ward leads the team with eight receptions for 97 yards, including a
long of 20 yards.
@ Cleveland Browns
Ward leads the team in receptions for the fifth time this season
(tied once), finishing with nine receptions for 79 yards and a TD. Pittsburgh
also snapped the ball directly to Ward, who ran for a key first down to set
up a field goal by Todd Peterson.
Vs. Atlanta Falcons
Ward had a 35-yard pass to Plaxico Burress nullified by a holding
penalty, but finishes with a team-leading 11 receptions for 139 yards and one
TD. Ward also leads the team in receptions for the sixth time during the
season. Also has a 29-yard run.
Although Tommy Maddox throws for over 500 yards (breaking Bobby Layne's 1958
team record of 409 yards), the Steelers still come up short having the first
NFL tie in 5 years.

@ Tennessee Titans
Leads the team for the seventh time during the season with 10
receptions for a career-high 168 yards and two TDs, including the 72-yard TD
on the game's initial play by Tommy Maddox. Kordell Stewart steps back into
the QB position after Maddox is taken off the field in ambulance.
Vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Ward has another tremendous game, tying for the team lead with five
receptions for 125 yards and one TD from Kordell Stewart. He surpasses 1,000
receiving yards for the second consecutive season (1,039), becoming the first
Steeler since Roy Jefferson (1968-1969) to achieve this milestone. Ward
runs for 39 yards on a reverse, leading to Jerome Bettis' 1-yard scoring run.
On the Steelers' second possession, Ward bounces off defensive back Kevin
Kaesviharm on a 64-yard scoring pass play, his 11th touchdown of the season.
@ Jacksonville Jaguars
In another big producing game, Ward leads the team for the eighth
time with eight catches for 51 yards and two runs for 19 yards. Playing the second half with a broken nose,
Jerome Bettis ran for 86 yards to reach 11,459 for his career and pass
John Riggins for 10th on the NFL career rushing list
Vs. Houston Texans
Ward leads the team for the ninth time during the season with nine
receptions for 76 yards, eclipsing his own team record of 94 receptions with
98. Ward also has seven yards on two rushes.
Vs. Carolina Panthers
Despite playing with a nagging hamstring injury, Ward becomes the first receiver in Steelers' history to
record 100 receptions in a season. Ward
has three receptions for 39 yards and one carry for two yards. The Steelers seize control of the AFC North
with the win 30-14.
@ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
For the 10th time during the season, Ward leads the team, catching
six passes for 78 yards. The Steelers
dominated the Bucs 17-7 to win the AFC North championship, their seventh
division title in 11 years under coach Bill Cowher.
Vs. Baltimore Ravens
Finishes with a team-high five receptions for 46 yards to lead the
team in receptions for the 11th time during the regular season. Ward also has a 23-yard TD reception from
Tommy Maddox. It was the seventh time
in Cowher's 11 seasons that the Steelers have won 10 or more games.

Vs. Cleveland Browns
Ward joins Plaxico Burress as the only
Steelers receiving tandem to each compile 100 or more receiving yards in a
postseason game since John Stallworth and Lynn Swann in Super Bowl XIII. He finishes with 11 receptions (tying
Franco Harris' team record for most catches in a postseason game) for
104 yards. Maddox led the Steelers on
a 77-yard drive that ended with a 5-yard scoring pass to Hines Ward with 3:06
left in the game. Ward also had a run
for 14 yards. The Steelers advance to the AFC Divisional Playoffs.
AFC Divisional Playoff Game 1/11/03
@ Tennessee Titans
Ward leads the team for the 13th time during the season with seven
receptions for 82 yards and two TDs. Starting
at the Steelers own 35-yard line, Tommy Maddox marched the Steelers down the
field and connected with Hines Ward for a 21-yard touchdown. The two-point
conversion, a pass from Ward to Plaxico Burress, was converted, tying the
game at 28. The Titans win it on Joe Nedney's
26 yard field goal in OT.

Ward is again selected to the 2003 Pro Bowl,
his second straight trip.
Selected to the Associated Press second-team
Ward led the team in receptions for the third
consecutive year and eclipsed his own team record with 112 receptions and also
finished four yards ahead of Plaxico Burress for team high passing yardage
honors (1,329), just 69 shy of Yancey Thigpen's team-record 1,398 yards
Ward became the first Pittsburgh wide
receiver to post three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.
Ward scored 12 receiving TDs to tie Louis
Lipps' (1985) and Buddy Dial's (1961) team record.
He became the first non-kicker to lead the
team in scoring since 1977 (Franco Harris).
Named the 2002 recipient of The Chief Award,
presented annually by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Pro Football Writers of
America to the player who best exemplifies the spirit of cooperation with the
media established by the late founder, Arthur J. Rooney, Sr.
Ward eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark for the
second straight year, joining Plaxico Burress as the first receiving tandem
in team history to both surpass 1,000 receiving yards for two straight seasons.
He also led the team with 18 receptions for
186 yards and three TDs in the postseason.
